Congratulations West Midlands!
Look out for the Big One: The world’s largest photo mosaic is on the way…
Thousands you from across the West Midlands are set to become joint-world record holders in August, after taking part in an ambitious arts project to create the largest photo mosaic in the world.
Between January and June, we’ve received 110,000 photos submitted from people across the region, and uploaded this site.
The pictures will be used to create a huge, record-breaking photo mosaic, the size of three tennis courts, to be unveiled at Birmingham’s Thinktank at Millennium Point on Saturday 23 August. Big Picture organisers have also confirmed that the mosaic will create the image of one of the thousands of photos sent in by the public, but the special picture will be kept under wraps until the big day!
Project manager, Kerry Endsor, said: “The response that we have received from people across the region has been fantastic. The photos have come flooding in - online, through the post, and by email and text message. People have sent us everything from holiday snaps to favourite pets, family and regional landmarks, and the online gallery really shows a unique portrait of the lives and loves of those of us in the West Midlands.
“We are now busy preparing for the World Record attempt and I can promise you that the final mosaic is going to be a spectacle not to be missed!”
Artist Helen Marshall has been appointed to oversee the physical production and creative direction of the final mosaic. Helen has invaluable experience of working on large scale photo mosaics, including a mosaic of over 3,000 photos for the BBC, British Legion and The Photographers’ Gallery.
Kerry Endsor, Project Manager for The Big Picture, said:
“Attempting to beat a World Record means that we are entering unchartered territory – The Big Picture is hoping to achieve something that has never been done before. To make sure that we have every chance of being successful, on behalf of the tens of thousands of people from across the Region who have submitted their photos, we needed to find the very best people for the job. We are really excited to have Helen on board, and we feel that the combination of her artistic vision, experience and unfailing enthusiasm for the project means that the West Midlands stands in a very strong position to hold a new World Record this summer!”.

It has been hard work finding, scanning, restoring, adding hundreds of my photographs, but, it has been a real pleasure to do and I can’t wait to see the fruits of all our labours!

Thanks everyone, the photo collection part may have drawn to a successful close, but there’s still loads coming up on the website.
As well as updates with how the World Record Mosaic is progressing we’ll be sharing stories from the photos collected and running features on photography and anything else we find out!
You can still look at all the photos everyone has submitted (there are still photos being scanned and uploaded in the office) and comment on them — if there are any favourites leave a note on the photo page and we’ll all be able to share them.
